I just got back from Cancun yesterday.
I was there celebrating the 50th birthday of my best friend and our Medical Director at Nutrition Solutions…
Dr. Saman Soleymani.
At 50, Saman rocks a robust six-pack and personifies the saying “Age is a number, not an excuse.”
Our entire group was fit, disciplined, and standing in stark contrast to what has sadly become the norm in Western civilization.
The pool party held at the resort was fascinating.
Having more girls than guys at a party of any kind is usually a fantastic thing.
Although there was probably a 3 to 1 girl-to-guy ratio at the pool…
The average weight of the females present (outside of our group) had to be 210+.
Yet, they still flaunted their bodies, 1/2 naked without a care in the world…
Drunk, twerking, downing 800-calorie pina coladas like there was no tomorrow.
A dangerous shift in societal norms has taken place where obesity is now the new normal.
A century ago, obesity was rare.
Seen mostly in circus sideshows.
Today, it’s a public spectacle but not the kind we should aspire to.
Obesity costs Americans $190 BILLION annually to treat its symptoms.
The question we should be asking, is this…
Why is the SAME administration that’s in charge of regulating prescription drugs are also responsible for the regulation of our food?
Something to think about.
This isn’t just an adult issue, however.
Obesity is also affecting the next generation in never-before-seen record numbers.
77% of young adults are unfit for military service.
As a result, the U.S. military is 1/2 the size of what it needs to be.
Which is an entirely separate (horrifying) issue.
Depression, ADHD, and diabetes have never been higher in all of human history.
Telling everyone they’re beautiful “just the way they are” might sound great in theory…
But it’s reckless, dangerous, and most importantly…
It’s not true.
Obesity isn’t beautiful.
Obesity is a disease. Literally.
Excess body fat is a symptom of said disease.
But that’s not discussed due to the fear of being offensive.
The body positivity movement is a license for complacency in the face of a life-threatening issue that not only destroys one’s health…
But also their confidence, self-esteem, energy, sex drive, and mental health.
It’s not just about aesthetics.
It’s about health, vitality, and longevity.
It’s about protecting and providing for the people who depend on you when they need you most.
It’s time for a wake-up call.
I reject the fat acceptance narrative and I hope that you will as well.
The best way any of us can do that is by LEADING BY EXAMPLE.
We must encourage those that we know and love to take control of their health and do better.
Because it’s not just about us…
It’s about our future generations.
