The Best Time to Drink Coffee

Muscle soreness is one of the more bittersweet results of a hard day’s work at the gym.

It’s a sign that you went all out!

Left it all on the field.

And pushed yourself to the limit.

Although this bittersweet feeling can often feel super satisfying…

No one likes it when aching muscles keep them from their regular workouts.

That’s why, in recent years, recovery tools like foam rollers, trigger point massagers like the theragun, and cold plunges have all become mainstream.

Allowing us to speed up recovery and get back in the gym ASAP.

However, there is one other method that we might be overlooking…

And chances are, you already use it every day.

That’s right, I’m talking about Caffeine. And, to be more specific, coffee.

The stimulant you rely on to get going in the morning or pick you up in the afternoon has now been shown to potentially reduce muscle soreness when consumed post-workout.

Now, before you start chugging lattes after the gym, let’s look at the facts:

The Mechanism Of Caffeine

Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant that exerts its effects by blocking adenosine receptors.

By doing so, it modulates neurotransmitter release, leading to increased alertness and reduced perception of fatigue.

The Real Cause Of Muscle Soreness

Contrary to popular belief, lactic acid ISN’T the main cause of prolonged muscle soreness.

The real culprit is actually micro-tears in the muscle fibers.

You see, during intense physical activities, especially those you’re unfamiliar with or find strenuous, your muscle fibers end up sustaining microscopic damage.

This damage triggers an inflammatory response, resulting in the sensation of soreness and stiffness.

While this is a natural part of the muscle-building process, finding ways to mitigate this discomfort becomes crucial for sustained physical activity.

So now that you understand the real cause of muscle soreness and how caffeine actually affects our bodies…

Here’s How Caffeine Can Reduce Muscle Soreness:

1. Dulls Pain.

Caffeine is known for dulling pain, and this extends to post-exercise soreness.

The mechanism involves blocking pain pathways, triggering adrenaline secretion, and stimulating the central nervous system to alter pain perception.

2. Creates An Anti-inflammatory Effect.

Inflammation is a common culprit behind muscle soreness. It often occurs as a natural response to the microscopic damage caused by intense physical activity.

Caffeine, with its anti-inflammatory potential, may help mitigate this response, providing relief from sore muscles.

3. Blocks Adenosine Receptors

One of the key ways that caffeine works is by blocking adenosine receptors in the brain.

Adenosine, a neurotransmitter that promotes relaxation and sleep, is effectively hindered by caffeine.

By blocking adenosine, caffeine enhances alertness and reduces the perception of pain or discomfort, i.e., muscle soreness.

Now, as much as caffeine has all these great recovery qualities – HOW you take caffeine also matters!

If you drink coffee or have caffeine in the morning, try to wait at least 90 minutes from
the time you wake up before doing so.

This is due to the natural rhythms of cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone, which naturally peaks within the first hour after waking.

Consuming caffeine too soon can interfere with this natural process, diminishing the effects of both caffeine and cortisol.

By waiting, you allow your body to wake up naturally, potentially enhancing the energizing effects of caffeine when you do consume it.

Additionally, this practice helps to regulate your circadian rhythm, contributing to better sleep quality and overall energy levels throughout the day.

It also reduces the likelihood of developing caffeine dependence, as your body learns to rely more on its natural mechanisms for wakefulness rather than external stimulants.

This approach can make caffeine more effective in promoting alertness and can also help prevent the mid-afternoon energy crash that many people experience, which is often exacerbated by early morning caffeine consumption and the resultant spike and sharp decline in cortisol levels.

For optimal recovery using caffeine, you could take a moderate amount post-workout, around between 100-200mg, which is 1-2 cups of coffee.

To optimize the benefits of caffeine, you can consider taking a moderate amount 30 minutes BEFORE a workout as well.

Pre workout caffeine will boost energy, increase fat burning, and improve focus, while also helping improve recovery time.

Make sure to constantly hydrate when taking any sort of caffeine. Caffeine is a diuretic which contributes to a lot of fluid loss.

Balancing your caffeine intake with an adequate amount of water to prevent dehydration is extremely important.

We always recommend that our clients at Nutrition Solutions drink at least 1 gallon of water every day – regardless of goal.

Super hydrating is a simple way to optimize your health, performance, and longevity.

Dehydration can easily amplify muscle soreness, tank your energy and cause brain fog.

In summary, consuming coffee or another source of caffeine about 30 minutes before exercise can be a strategic way to enhance physical performance and endurance.

While consuming caffeine post workout helps reduce inflammation, and muscle soreness, and can speed up recovery.

*It’s important to consider personal tolerance to caffeine as well as timing and dosage to avoid potential side effects like jitteriness or gastrointestinal upset.
